Runoff Projection from an Alpine Watershed in Western Canada: Application of a Snowmelt Runoff Model

نویسندگان

چکیده

The rising global temperature is shifting the runoff patterns of snowmelt-dominated alpine watersheds, resulting in increased cold season flows, earlier spring peak and reduced summer runoff. Projections future are beneficial preparing for anticipated changes streamflow regimes. This study applied degree–day Snowmelt Runoff Model (SRM) combination with MODIS to remotely sense snow cover observations modeling snowmelt response Upper Athabasca River Basin western Canada. After assessing its ability simulate observed historical SRM was projecting basin. inclusion a spatial temporal variation factor (DDF) separation DDF glaciated non-glaciated areas were found be important improved simulation varying conditions over multiple years. simulations, driven by an ensemble six statistically downscaled GCM runs under RCP8.5 scenario period (2070–2080), show consistent pattern projected change, substantial increases May runoff, smaller winter months, decreased months (June–August). Despite SRM’s relative simplicity requirement only few input variables, model performed well simulating provides projections trends previous studies.

Possibilistic uncertainty analysis of a conceptual model of snowmelt runoff

This study presents the analysis of predictive uncertainty of a conceptual type snowmelt runoff model. The method applied uses possibilistic rather than probabilistic calculus for the evaluation of predictive uncertainty. Possibility theory is an information theory meant to model uncertainties caused by imprecise or incomplete knowledge about a real system rather than by randomness. A snow domi...

Solute Chemistry of Snowmelt and Runoff in an Alpine Basin, Sierra Nevada

Snowpack runoff contributions to the hydrochemistry of an alpine catchment in the Sierra Nevada were evaluated in 1986 and 1987 by analyzing snowpack, meltwater, and stream water samples for major inorganic ions, conductance, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), and silicate. An ionic pulse in meltwater with initial concentrations twofold to twelvefold greater than the snowpack average, varying wi...

Snowmelt runoff modelling in an arid mountain watershed, Tarim Basin, China

The feasibility of simulating daily snowmelt runoff in an arid mountain watershed with limited hydro-meteorological measurements was explored with an enhanced temperature-index snowmelt runoff model (SRM) in which the degree-day factor (DDF) is varied on the basis of shortwave solar radiation and snow albedo. The model satisfactorily simulated snowmelt runoff with a model efficiency of 0Ð64 for...

Effects of suburbanization upon snowmelt runoff

The influence of suburbanization upon runoff response to snowmelt and rain-on-snow inputs was examined for a small drainage basin in south-central Ontario. Modification of more than 50% of the basin area over a 14 year period led to a six-fold increase in the spring quickflow response ratio and an increase in the number of snowmelt events that generate appreciable quickflow. Anticipated changes...
